There are countless misconceptions about what it’s like to move to a retirement community. On March 15, Dr. Dale Williams, a 10-year resident of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, gave an enlightening talk to dispel many of these retirement myths.

1. There are too many rules and regulations.

Just like any neighborhood, Masonic Village expects residents to keep their trash and belongings in order and on their own property. And throwing loud parties until 3 a.m. is generally frowned upon in any community. Residents are mostly free to live as they please, and rules are generally based on keeping everyone safe.

2. I can’t keep my car.

You absolutely can keep your vehicles here at Masonic Village. The only thing they ask is to keep the official Masonic Village decal on the back window to let our security team know it’s yours.

3. You can’t come and go as you please.

Masonic Village has no curfews or hard rules about leaving the property. If you leave for vacation, they ask that you notify staff to make sure security keeps an eye on your house. That’s it.

4. There’s no active social life.

Dr. Williams held up the monthly events calendar magazine, Village Living, and said, “There’s only one day this entire month where there are no events – Easter Sunday.” No matter what your interests or schedule, Masonic Village offers a wide variety of entertainment and events every month.

5. I’ll feel lonely and isolated.

Most residents find that the opposite is true. When you live in a regular neighborhood, you’re surrounded by people of all ages and it might be difficult to find like-minded friends. At Masonic Village, you’re surrounded by people who have similar values, interests and upbringings. It makes finding friends a breeze.

6. My house is paid off. Why would I pay a monthly fee?

Your paid-off house is still costing you property taxes, maintenance and upkeep, utilities, etc. If you move to Masonic Village, you spend a little more and gain a lot more. They take care of lawn and snow maintenance, cleaning, upkeep, etc. For example, the landscaping team gives each cottage resident a list of flowers to choose from come springtime so their yards have a personal touch.

7. I can get medical care at home.

That’s a big trend right now, but are you sure of how skilled and available the care is? The Masonic Village medical care staff are here for you 24/7 and are highly skilled at what they do. They uphold the highest expectation and standards of their employees.

8. My kids will take care of me.

Unfortunately, adult children nowadays don’t have the free time or extra income like they used to. And let’s be honest — most people would rather not become a burden to their children. Give everyone peace of mind and know that all of your needs will be met in a community like this.

9. I’m not ready yet.

There’s a waiting list for a community of this caliber. If you wait until something bad happens, it’ll be too late to move in quickly, and it might be too late to enjoy the retirement you’ve always dreamed of.
